Combining Tradition with Technology at the Cowessess First Nation Pow Wow

From August 13 to 15, 2024, a traditional Pow Wow was celebrated at Cowessess First Nation. The event was a vibrant showcase of Indigenous traditions, featuring drumming, dancing, and community gathering.

On August 13th, Nanan STEM Academy set up an engaging booth that drew in children from all around the community. The booth was filled with coding and robotics activities designed to captivate young minds and teach important cultural values simultaneously. Students of various ages took part in programming activities using ozobot, robot mouse, and Edison robots, making the learning experience both fun and educational.

The highlight of the booth was the integration of the 7 Grandfather Teachings—Humility, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Truth, Respect, and Love—into the technology activities. These teachings, which form the moral and ethical foundation of many Indigenous communities, were incorporated into the coding challenges. The students programmed the robots to navigate towards each animal that represents the 7 Grandfather Teachings and then reflected on the significance of each.

Another exciting activity was the collaborative Minecraft project, where students worked together to build a virtual Arbour. This digital construction was not just a game; it was a symbol of the Pow Wow itself, representing a place of gathering, unity, and celebration. This collaboration allowed them to blend their cultural values with modern technology, creating a meaningful and memorable experience.

The Cowessess First Nation Pow Wow of 2024 was an amazing event that will be remembered by its traditional dances, songs, and ceremonies.
