Skills for Success Summer Camp Empowers Young Minds for the Future

In an exciting display of educational innovation and collaboration, the inaugural Skills for Success Summer Camp held from July 31st to August 4th, 2023, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, left a trail of delighted and inspired young minds in its wake. Hosted by the Nanan STEM Academy in partnership with the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division and Skills Canada Saskatchewan, the camp brought together children aged 6 to 13 for a transformative week of skill-building and personal growth as featured in Moose Jaw Today news.

With the rapid evolution of technology and the ever-changing landscape of the workforce, the organizers recognized the need to equip the next generation with essential skills that will enable them to thrive in the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The camp’s goal was to provide a comprehensive educational experience that focused on fostering creativity, digital literacy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, collaboration, leadership, adaptability, and cultural competence.

Throughout the week, the campers were immersed in a diverse range of activities carefully curated to cultivate these skills. Students engaged in hands-on coding sessions, where they learned to navigate the world of programming and digital problem-solving. Robotics workshops ignited their curiosity, encouraging them to explore the exciting world of automation and artificial intelligence.

Artistic expression was also a crucial component of the camp, with young artists taking up their brushes to create stunning acrylic landscape paintings. Math sessions challenged their analytical thinking, while French language lessons introduced them to the richness of cultural diversity.

Using TinkerCAD, students delved into the realm of 3D design, honing their spatial reasoning and design thinking skills. The highlight of this experience was the 3D-printing activity, where students brought their digital creations to life.

Esports was a highly effective means of teaching collaboration and teamwork. Justin Matheson, an instructor, course designer, and blogger, harnessed the competitive spirit of gaming to instill vital interpersonal skills, further enriching the students’ learning journey.

Reflecting on the success of the camp, organizers expressed their commitment to its continued growth. “Our aim was not just to teach skills, but to provide a pathway to a lifestyle and develop the whole person. We believe that these foundational skills will serve as a solid base, allowing them to excel in an ever-evolving world,” explained Corinne Dourlent, Instructor and course designer with Nanan Academy.
