Unleashing Young Minds at the Skills For Success Summer Camp 2024

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, hosted the FutureCamp: Skills For Success Summer Camp from July 29 to August 2, 2024 as featured on Moose Jaw Express news. This event was a team effort by Skills Canada Saskatchewan, Nanan STEM Academy, and the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division. The camp aimed to inspire youth and teach them important skills for the future.

The science theme was Aerodynamics. Students used the Engineering Design Process to create aerodynamic car models. They designed their cars in TinkerCAD, 3D-printed them, and painted them with acrylic paints.

Esports was part of the camp to teach essential skills. Students played Minecraft and Rocket League, which helped them learn the following essential skills in a fun way: mindfulness, growth mindset, fortitude, and leadership. The camp also included science experiments to learn about potential and kinetic energy. These experiments were fun and educational, sparking a love for science in the students. Robotics was another highlight. Students programmed the Edison Educational Robot and saw their code bring the robots to life.

Special guest speakers added excitement. Clyde Abanid, a Skills Canada Gold Winner, is set to compete in WorldSkills in Lyon, France in September 2024. Clyde shared his amazing journey with the class. Krystal Nieckar, Executive Director of Skills Canada Saskatchewan, talked about the importance of skills development.

Students also learned about artificial intelligence (AI) and how to use AI tools effectively. This gave them valuable knowledge for the future.

The Skills For Success Summer Camp 2024 was more than a learning experience; it was a celebration of creativity and discovery. Students left with new skills, great memories, and a love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
